Don’t let the “what ifs” keep you from what can be.

Last night, while I lay thinking here,
some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
and pranced and partied all night long
and sang their same old Whatif song

(Excerpt – Shel Silverstein “Whatif”)

Ah yes, the “Whatifs!” What if? Those two pesky words holding you back, keeping you from your full potential. Some of us live, or rather don’t live, by these words. So worried about what may happen – you never see what is right in front of you. And what is in front of you? Your life. Happiness, Joy, Freedom. When you continue to worry about things that MAY happen it prevents you from so many wonderful opportunities. Aren’t you tired of this? I know I am.

I retired early from teaching. Quite frankly, teaching had lost its joy. I no longer felt happy at work. I felt like I couldn’t help my students due to continuous testing, meetings, and paperwork. The misery of the staff, students, and parents wore me down each and every day. Tired, sick, and anxious became a way of life. I came to the realization this was no way to live and I wasn’t going to subject myself to the continuous stress. But those “what ifs” were always lurking in the background. What if I don’t have enough money? What if I don’t have anything to do? What if I get sick? What if I can’t afford my home? What if lose my teacher friends?

It was a big step for me to take the leap and retire. I can’t say that it’s been all roses, but I’m SO much happier retired from teaching. The best part – being able to do my own thing! It’s opened up so many possibilities. First, I started my own business in healing and coaching. That brought with it a new circle of friends. I still substitute teach occasionally at my old school so I can support and visit with my teacher friends.

When I do sub, I just teach and enjoy the students. I can’t tell you how many students say to me, “You’re the sub who laughs and is happy all the time.” Yup, that’s me! Teaching is enjoyable again. Life is good!

Even having to downsize from my current home is not the horrible thing I thought it would be. I’d rather not have to think about money anymore. That decided, I’m searching for a new, less expensive place to live. I’m looking forward to finding my perfect house with a yard where I can grow a huge flower garden.

Because really, when you get down to it, creating, dreaming, and change is what life is about. Don’t let the ‘what ifs” keep you from moving forward in your life. Stay in the moment. Be aware of how you feel. What’s happening right now? Is it good or do you need to change?

Don’t go through life feeling stuck because of worry and fears. I promise you, staying in the moment, enjoying what’s right in front of you, knowing when you need a change and taking the steps needed, will reward you in unbelievable ways. Your dreams will come true.
